William Blake was an English painter, poet and print-maker is considered a pioneering figure in the history of poetry of the Romantic Age. Influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American Revolutions, most of Blake’s poetry blossomed on the 18th century thereby characterizing his work as part of the Romantic movement and “Pre-Romantic”. Blake’s writing style changed drastically over the years. His early poetry strongly brings out the protest against dogmatic religions whereas his later poems depict private mythology with complex symbolism where he emphasizes the notions of self-sacrifice and forgiveness as the road to interior wholeness. Blake’s 19th century “free love” movement got him railed against traditional Christian notions of chastity as a virtue. Let’s celebrate this legendary poet and his poetic genius.
