Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was a German poet and philosopher of the late 19th century who challenged the concepts of Christianity, traditional morality and religion. Nietzsche was an inspiration to many poets of his time because of his honest questioning of all doctrines. Despite his constantly deteriorating health, Nietzsche wrote prolifically and profoundly for years highlighting a pessimistic view on modern society and culture through his poems. W. B. Yeats and Arthur Symons described Nietzsche as the intellectual heir to William Blake.
