Surviving Attention

Surviving Attention short poem

She’ll only dance as long as you don’t watch her
a heavenly symmetry in the distance between elbows,
knees. Gravity is only a suggestion while she progresses
through nameless steps, her unplucked body stepping
across thresholds billions of sisters have crossed
mouthing words to what she perceives is a popular song
but it’s the only song, magnetic as the blood in her cheeks.
completely elastic, a kind of beast each machine aspires to be
beautiful, unfaltering the very air becomes a zephyr
plays around her, cushions her feet, floods her lungs.
It’s all too short – something will happen to deflect her motion,
the ancient sway derailed by a cough from another room
or a mirror, her swift eye captured by the grace of a goddess
shocked to see perfection sidelong in her very own home
she comes to a halt like a statue deserving a gallery
