Self Medication

Self Medication prose poem

Pharmacist’s pantry or landlord’s larder,
choices aplenty for a mind so disposed.
Maximum dosage to test the boundaries,
roulette wheel silently spinning.

Senses slither away like an exposed serpent,
seeking the shapelessness of the shadows.
The comforting numbness of certain stupor,
anticipated like visits from his favourite phantoms.

A rancid residue of once clear thought clinging,
the only resistance left in desperation’s den.
Too putrified to acknowledge logic,
Or deflect from spiralling descent.

Oblivious to outside observation,
former allies’ feelings fogged into surrender.
Self destruction is a solo stroll,
made simpler by self medication.

I greet, I don’t wish you well. I smile, I don’t laugh I eat, I don’t indulge I pray, I am no devotee I sing, I have no harmony within I drink, I do in abundance I speak, with words
