Proffer A Prayer

Proffer A Prayer long poem

Holy Aggie
a morning near you was an age of enlightenment

You exist ever
in a sleepless dawn of scrubland
fallow patches, rusting equipage, savaged stand of pecan
a semicircle of bidders, smoke heavy in the hollows

Fourteen and a day
pale skin above workman’s brown
rough cut hair and skim milk skin
sun rising paints your temple
blue veins pulsing with your thoughts

Illuminate my sin
nothing so deliberate as contact
me just an unshaven face in the line
you the light flooding
you transforming it squashing farm-dull tones
lips a berry red echoed in chewed nails
eyes filled with a dynamic brown asking
what is more fertile than a first unrealized blush

Precious hours
me stumbling over tufts and trash heaps
you showing your ancestral parcel with a grace
vultures never deserved caring only
for scrap metal prices, acreage discounts
of course you diminished the auctioneer
simply correcting every error
pronunciation, location, it was your universe

after all
having crept away with nothing but damp shoes
unable to leave the haggard motel
me entering a reverie wherein I’m allowed
to guide a holy elegance so rapturous
the trash and roadside pebbles took to the air
formed a halo around the Earth

me diminished
shamed to know your name and roll it around
the cankerous maw of my imagination
still a year later I returned, a pilgrim
catching no scent I asked at the auctioneer’s
where you and your family might have gone
learned your fate of asphyxiation
gasping your sad gray last on a linoleum floor
carbon monoxide poisoning in a deserted basement
