A Dog In A Tree?

A Dog In A Tree? long poem

I think that I shall never see
A thing so strange as a dog in a tree
Do you wonder at this refrain?
Listen a moment, and I’ll explain
I’ll tell you all how it could be
A great big dog, stuck up in a tree
When my kids were very little
And smelled a bit like peanut brittle
I had a helper, a mother’s assistant
A “nanny” who was most persistent
An Old English Sheepdog, big and hairy
A watchdog who was always wary
She spent her time each and every day
Watching the children at their play
She was always on her guard
Never let them leave her yard
Yes, she watched over every one
And she loved to join in all their fun
She’d swing on the swings, slide down the slide
Or jump on the merry go round for a ride
Catch a Frisbee, or go for a swim
Whatever game suited a child’s whim
She’d play tag, or hide and seek
She’d hide her face and never peek
Yes, anything those kids could do
Why, she thought she could do it too
And that, you see, is why she tried
To climb a tree…my how she cried!
That sound, of course, caused me to worry
I ran outside, I was in a hurry!
Stuck on a limb just above my head
That poor dog was filled with dread
Did I mention that she was big and hairy?
A bit too much for me to carry
It took a fireman to get her down
And she became famous all over town
Whenever we’d take her out for a walk
All the people would point and talk
So long ago…how I miss that gal
My mother’s helper, and my best pal

The years in front are Now shorter than the Ones behind. I lay awake At night, wondering how It will end. It will be sudden, Or not sudden, obviously. A long decline into madness? That’ll do me. Loss of hair,
