Dancing With The Devil

Dancing With The Devil short poem

The jogger runs
His daily mile
His mind far away
His face a weary smile

The woes of the world
Don’t mean a thing to him
His world; his life
His days are growing thin

To be able to complete
This one last race
No prize to hold high
Just enough to save face

Hold his head up high
And once again cry
For the pleasure of freedom
In this dying man’s eye

To make it to the end
Before the pain sets in
Creeping through his bones
Like a leper from within

If he only knew why
His eyes are now too dry
To shed a single tear
No longer able to deny

Just one more mile
And the game will be up
Another soul to collect
Another life to corrupt

The deal at once welcome
As the answer to his dreams
A debt to be collected
And added to the screams

The end within view
As the pain starts to mount
The long and lonely path
For which he has to account

A cold, creeping shadow
Reaches out from within
This you can’t out-run
It’s a game you cannot win
