Welcome 2018 prose poem

Uploaded by Dr.Indu Nautiyal

Hail New Year !
The guest most honoured
And welcomed with utmost cheer
Around the world, everywhere !

With houses and homes all lit up
And vibrant floral decors
Sweet music floating in the air
Mingling with laughter and cheer

Fire works shooting up the sky
Creating awesome images
To startle curious onlookers
That watch them with amazement

Exchange of delicious sweetmeats
Smiles and warm greetings
Among family members and friends
And even total strangers .

You are the great harbinger
Of joy and hope everywhere
Coming with a bagful of wonderful gifts,
No one has seen earliar

Now as you settle down here
I have to make a humble request
May I have something of my choice
From your bag that is unpacked so far ?

No ! I am not going to ask
Anything for just myself
That would be rather selfish
And even worse , a greedy gesture

But my wishlist does include
Safe shelters for the homeless
Food enough for all the hungry
And bliss of family for the orphans

Peace for the troubled ountries
Wreaked by insane violence
And more of good sense and mercy
For those at helm of power

A resolve among all humans
To love and protect Nature
And behave as worthy children
Of a mother so patient and benign

Pray , grant me all these wishes
Or at least some few of them
And I will be singing in gratitude
In all the times ahead!!!

I have been a teacher for about four decades ,but even more than that , a student and learner all along --literature being my favourite subject with special love for poetry , a trait I seem to have inherited from my father, who was a very good poet ,it was he that instilled in me a deep love for poetry early in childhood . Starting as a science student ,I shifted to literature after graduation and and worked on Emily Dickinson's poetry for Doctoral degree. I don't claim to be a poet ,but do admit my inherent love for poetic utterances as and when I find them and sometimes feel inspired to give vent to my own emotions in words that seem to convey them .Honestly it happens quite effortlessly and also leaves me with an immense satisfaction .If it can be termed poetry ,all the more rewarding. .
