A Soldier’s Message

A Soldiers Message elegy

Uploaded by Uma Sudhindra

Don’t cry for me…
I’ve met my destiny
And found solace in the soil that covers me.
Look beyond my grave
Gather the stones, guns, bullets and grenades
Build them into wheels
For windmills, bicycles and trains.
Look into children’s eyes
Hold their little hands and promise me
You will not ask the same of them…
You will build a monument, stone by stone,
covered with the memory of war and death…
Breathe into it a life, an energy… in memory of me.
The moon and the stars, their silvery light shed,
Upon these fields where lie our dead.
A halo and a glow
Where Indian army’s heroes met their fate.
How can I explain the silence, noise and din
Or even the bullet wounds & shrapnel driven in.
Of shrieks & cries of my soldiers in pain,
As I witness my civilian brothers become beasts again.
Listen hard, oh my countrymen & women too
These battles were fought only for you…
As you get on with your daily life, all I can say,
The best of manhood died today!
Don’t cry for me…
I’ve met my destiny
And found solace in the soil that covers me!
