The One That Got Away

I know that I am losing you,
But I will never regret choosing you
Because I am in love,
Of course that’s never enough.

Every night when I fall asleep,
I see you in my dreams,
The bright smile,
Infectious eyes,
And laugh that if only for a moment,
Could make me forget the world.

But inevitably,
I wake up,
In the crushing reality that you’re gone,
Replaced by an empty hole in my heart
That I will try desperately to fill.

Although I try to move on,
Find a different soul to love,
A puzzle piece to fit that hole left in my heart,
I find my efforts to be wasted.

Because hearing “I love you” from a different mouth sounds wrong,
And saying “I love you” leaves a bad taste when it’s not to you.

You’re the one that got away,
And though I wish you would have stayed,
I hope you can find happiness,
In another place.
