Rights Over The Dead

Rights Over The Dead prose poem

Ceremonial Rituals in Hindu Religion smacks the logic
Daughters and Sons though born in the same womb are differentiated

Son’s carry the paternal ancestral legacy
while Daughters are abandoned midway to assume In laws legacy

Sons may not look after the aged parents when in need
while Daughters may take care of them with at most dedication
But when the time comes to perform ceremonial rituals
Son takes the centre stage and he becomes the authority
to facilitate dead parents to have smooth heavenly journey
while daughter who sacrifices self for keeping parents alive
are relegated to a position of no body on their death

Sons enjoy the rights over the property without claiming the rights
to take care of the aged parents while Daughters have no right over
the property but claim the rights to take care of the aged parents
(This situation is more predominant in Rural sides)

Daughters when born are assumed as goddess Lakshmi who brings prosperity to them
while they feel she as a burden on attaining the marriageable age

Sons when born are treated as royal kings who is bound to take care of them when in need
but when they get him married , they develop phobia that Son may dance to the tune of his wife
and neglect them

Until the mindset of parents change not to discriminate their children on the basis of gender
the Blind faith they have that only Sons should perform their last rights to get them salvation
remain intact and society as a whole are sure to be permanently blind folded

At Least Eighty Dead. elegy

“At least eighty dead,” is all you’ve said…. As that charred colossus, Grenfell, towers overhead. The hopes and fears of those you loved, Dead. Those missing, without mention, who died, without dying, who cried, without crying. The faceless, euphemised headlines

Down the drain, down the drain, follow the sand down the drain. His soul woven cloak awaits, scythe in hand, ferry leaving the docks. Crooked steps, cold and blackened breath, take me unto you. One leg in the grave, half
