Ode To The Holy Ganges

Ode To The Holy Ganges long poem

Uploaded by Dr.Indu Nautiyal

Hail to you O holy Ganges !
A river merely you never have been
Darling daughter of mighty Himalaya
Mother to millions of doting devotees .

How you descend from the heavenly heights
Like a lively , sportive girl child
Out on a delightful adventure spree ,
Ever in search of fun and pleasure .

From your snow capped pristine abode
You rush out to carve your own new route
Skipping gleefully on mountainous rocks
And jumping daringly into dangerous ravines.

Traversing through alpine forests on way
And rough , unfriendly , tough terrains
You keep flowing on over all hurdles
Filling the valley with innocent laughter

Your child like mirth and fun momentum
Slowly gives place to mature gestures
And as a lady of grace you enter new regions
With plain landscape and thick habitats .

Thus you further your eventful journey
With more than a thousand miles to cover
Before you finally join the great ocean
And get mingled with its deep waters .

But all along this long trajectory
You run doling out your gifts liberally
To millions of life forms waiting on the banks
And even to those who are not in sight .

Since time immemorial in the remote past
You have been nurturing this land of ours
Making it beautiful , civilized and rich
With treasures of great spiritual wealth .

I bow to you , o gracious goddess ,
With deep reverence and gratitude ,
Pray , go on blessing us with your favors
As you have been doing for countless ages !

I have been a teacher for about four decades ,but even more than that , a student and learner all along --literature being my favourite subject with special love for poetry , a trait I seem to have inherited from my father, who was a very good poet ,it was he that instilled in me a deep love for poetry early in childhood . Starting as a science student ,I shifted to literature after graduation and and worked on Emily Dickinson's poetry for Doctoral degree. I don't claim to be a poet ,but do admit my inherent love for poetic utterances as and when I find them and sometimes feel inspired to give vent to my own emotions in words that seem to convey them .Honestly it happens quite effortlessly and also leaves me with an immense satisfaction .If it can be termed poetry ,all the more rewarding. .
