Thieves In Suits

Thieves In Suits prose poem

Uploaded by Mercy Asamani

Morning by morning,
They plough the road
From east to west
Knowing not where they head
They take not a cue
From the words of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah,
“We move neither to the east nor west but we move forward”

Their tanks filled to the brim with the sweats of tax payers
Their air conditions forever in the winter,
With their bellies flying high in the sky
Synonymous to the fat cheques in their briefcases
Their forgetful ears and blind eyes
Which forgets the sights that awe
And never wish for the best for the land

Long hours they sit behind closed doors
Fidgeting with their phones and pens
In the pretence of working for the land
Yet, same bills are passed
Same drafts are signed
Same solutions over and over
Yet static the land remains
Because out of the door goes not just them
But that which was said for hours

Thieves in suits
Well cut suits and clear cut theft
Diplomatic suits but in their pockets lie our sweats
On the toilets lie our drafts
Our bills go down the drain
Yet, the suits shield them
It elevates them from mere thieves to diplomatic thieves
Ones whose family will you find trace not on the land
Those that enjoy our sweats in the lands that lie afar
Lands that were borne after their
But prospers above thee

The difference is never age but the suit
While others wear suits of service
Thieves disguise themselves in suits
Suits that weigh from side to side
Never from thoughts of goodwill
But from the pauper’s sweat that drips

The time is now
It is time to hold them by their ties
To cough out our sweat
To act their words
And implement our bills
The land belongs to all not a faction
And all must till the land and enjoy its goodies
Including generations unborn.
