Invoking The Rain Gods

Invoking The Rain Gods prose poem

Uploaded by Dr.Indu Nautiyal

Come month of May
And the sultry summer is here
With all its fire and fury
In full swing .

Like an unwanted guest
It arrives with no invitation
And continues staying unduly
Despite the hosts’ displeasure .

Equipped with its lethal weapons —
scorching sunbeams and killing heat waves
Wreaking havoc on the land and skies
Whatsoever falls in its stride .

The landscape all parched up and dry
Along with thirsty and famished creatures
Reeling under death -like conditions
Is seeking a little respite for all .

Even the Sun god seems to support
This cruel , insensible game of Summer
Else why is fire being poured from Heaven
Turning this earth into a blazing furnace ?

Hence Mercy ! Rain gods ! Have mercy on us !
Rush down kindly in torrents to quell
This sadistic play of an unkind power
And restore cool times of innocent pleasures!

I have been a teacher for about four decades ,but even more than that , a student and learner all along --literature being my favourite subject with special love for poetry , a trait I seem to have inherited from my father, who was a very good poet ,it was he that instilled in me a deep love for poetry early in childhood . Starting as a science student ,I shifted to literature after graduation and and worked on Emily Dickinson's poetry for Doctoral degree. I don't claim to be a poet ,but do admit my inherent love for poetic utterances as and when I find them and sometimes feel inspired to give vent to my own emotions in words that seem to convey them .Honestly it happens quite effortlessly and also leaves me with an immense satisfaction .If it can be termed poetry ,all the more rewarding. .
