We And The Good Earth

We And The Good Earth prose poem

We And The Good Earth prose poemUploaded by Dr.Indu Nautiyal

A date set apart in the world calendar
In honor and reverence of the great good Earth
Is aptly in keeping with the need of the hour
And a well thought of welcome gesture !

It’s time we owe allegiance to
This most benign yet silent benefactor
Express our gratitude , concern and care
Just as we feel for our own dear mother .

A day not only to observe in letter
But to pledge ourselves to guard her against
The threats of damage and utter destruction
Caused by man’s insatiable greed .

High time to think and reflect again
The Earth and man are inter dependent
Hence stop plundering her any longer
Else we will hasten our own sad doom .

That she is not merely soil and sand
But a living spirit with unique character
Having endless patience and forbearance
Heavenly grace and rare attributes .

No less adorable is she than a mother
That gives us birth and brings us up
Allows us to grow and play on her lap
Then offers firm ground to stand on our legs .

Now shall we , as ungrateful children
Neglect , ignore and damage her being
Chasing madly our selfish interests
Even at the cost of her very existence ?

For millions of years has Nature sustained
Life on this amazing planet of ours
Shouldn’t we keep it in health and shape
As a precious heritage for generations to come ?

I have been a teacher for about four decades ,but even more than that , a student and learner all along --literature being my favourite subject with special love for poetry , a trait I seem to have inherited from my father, who was a very good poet ,it was he that instilled in me a deep love for poetry early in childhood . Starting as a science student ,I shifted to literature after graduation and and worked on Emily Dickinson's poetry for Doctoral degree. I don't claim to be a poet ,but do admit my inherent love for poetic utterances as and when I find them and sometimes feel inspired to give vent to my own emotions in words that seem to convey them .Honestly it happens quite effortlessly and also leaves me with an immense satisfaction .If it can be termed poetry ,all the more rewarding. .
