We Want To Live In America

I want to live in America
But a target is on me in America
“They’re stealing our jobs,”
“They’re raping our women,”
There’s no hope for me in America

We wanted education, work
Just to live on the land you stole from us
We wanted our work: the fruits you eat, the streets you drive on
To be just as appreciated as Billy filling in blanks,
In buildings we built
The days where my child comes from school
Shaking with fear
Because Maria went with the man in blue
Or days where my child couldn’t attend school
Because she was trying to feed yours
But because my skin is not like yours
I am no good.
I can’t live in America

We can’t walk down the streets
Without accusations being shouted at us
“Rape,” “Murder,” “Thief.”
But let’s not talk about how you stole my people
Or how you raped my people
Murdered us because
It was funny, a game.
But I blink at your wife
A friendly thing in my town where I was raised
4 days later, my own mother doesn’t even recognize me
But because you saw darkness in my skin
And the light in hers
“We’re goin’ down to him a lesson”
And it was a lesson I’d never forget
Because I can’t live in America

Where was your warrant at 1 in the morning
I showed my papers
I have my rights
Where were your laws when I was dragged out of court
Tortured and killed
For the enjoyment of your people
You stole our rights
Our hopes
Our dreams

A country built on our backs
Because you stole us
Took from us
Brainwashed us into believing we deserved it
We can’t live in America
Land for the free
Not the hopeful or the freed
