Lives To Be Lived

Lives To Be Lived short poem

light frosting her lenses
strobing as traffic flits by
craziness of a zombie snail
flashing visions of worlds
as yet unbuilt

just a woman
dressed for winter
striding proud in knee-length boots
could be anyone
then she’s gone

these rapid flirtations
both diary and history
like dropping a tungsten ball bearing
into a pan of colored sand
then recording the chaos

medical student
daughter of doctors
has long felt the clutch
of arthritis wadded in her joints
knows she’ll never hold a scalpel

she wants to feel a baby
grow inside her
to lose her own life and purpose
to a helpless parasite
become queen of brown

early mornings full of the smell
of milk and infant scalp
sharing warmth
spinning out quilted dreams
that always end in success

there’s a screech in the coffee shop
the grinder locked its jaw
on some foreign object
something it either can’t process
or can’t believe to be present

a cloud covers the sun
and a cold snake ropes
the patrons together
the herald of evening as rain
moves in with the promise of sleep

I have lost the scent
of the sun-eyed woman
and must leave her miracle baby unborn
I’m headed home to my own mysteries
will I ever sleep with my lover again
