Ocean Shores

Ocean Shores long poem

The moon is promiscuous
I begin my walk
and it’s making love
to the frost on the road

the sun is yet to appear

there’s a cut in the road
salt water sets within
slow jelly devoid of life
the bridge above is a mirror
destined to die as smoke
a few hours from now

the locals are coming awake
they stoke their wood stoves
then climb into their pickups
thundering to McDonalds
for burnt coffee and hashbrowns

they give me wide birth
on the cinder shoulder

the Pacific Ocean hides
twenty degrees below the moon
quiet in its machinations
it inscribed a poem in wrack
annotated the tideline
then slipped back
holding its breath to hear the praise

the locals have assembled
at the plastic tables
veterans of untold years and wars
arranged in the order
they arrived here
at the end of the highway
they swap stories of practical skills
fire-building and the correct
usage of handguns and service dogs
I’m excluded from their society

it’s going to be a day for kite flying
bright and cold
the moon slips into the ocean
full of praise for its love letter
as the waves move in
racing the frigid beachcombers
to erase the words of the sea
