Bedfellows

Bedfellows short poem

It stormed all night
rattling teeth and windows
the small tribe of cats
sheathed their claws for once
crept into human beds
drawn incapable of love
to the safety of something larger
a fleshy barricade to take the blows
something more electric
for the lightning to strike

morning was wrung out
like a woman waking
from a week of high fever
drifting , stunned
by the lack of pain
her clarity of vision not returned
touching all the familiar items
as if she were a thief
and time her accomplice

the power was out
so the family made
a cold breakfast and ate
on the porch in the sun
never looking at a phone
or television set, just chewing
considering their fellow survivors
so familiar the smiles
but what did they really want
what drew them back
except weakness and fear
of the sound of thunder
