Headlines For A Grim Thursday

Headlines For A Grim Thursday long poem

The Koreans are trading artillery shots
a few more young lives shredded
all those safe old crows remaking nests
eyes so dark you can’t see them
when they shift focus
you think they’re watching your hands
until you feel a blade in the back
nerves stiffening your limbs
easier to bind you up and drain you off.
hurricane Danny is heading up the parade
they’ve drawn a line on television
scarring the Lesser Antilles
all throughout Guadaloupe
purple throated caribs sense the storm to come
shudder to taste nectar gone sour
school children chew their pencils
enjoying that delicious give of hard flesh
glance at a world map to dream
about a home not surrounded
by the violence of blue.
you’ll note a man is dead
his head severed from his neck
if you seek out the video evidence
it’s not like a Hollywood movie
an easy swing bringing death
instead it’s butchery
hacking with a partial-sharp blade
trying to find vertebral gaps
while blood flops onto the dirty ground
in decreasing dollops
while far removed from the crisis zone
relatives decry the violence
tuck any faults the victim might have had
behind the back of the reliquary niche
his memory will occupy henceforth.
