Shakespeare In The Park

Shakespeare In The Park short poem

Torrents swept the gutters
Mercutio ran in from the parking lot
hoping there would be no stabbings
under Romeo’s arm today

frogs felt the building mud and croaked
atypical for Seattle at any time
haunted house thunder
shook the aged brickwork

all the imported drunks and homeless
started to reminisce
about the places they’d been raised

in a city where portable awnings
were typically safe as houses
they took off with umbrella wings
twisted up on spindled legs
flying in short hops
while the toughest of predator cats
searched out groundling crows
flopping damp beneath cedars
easy snacks on a gloomy day

the whole cast gathered
compelled into a circle
dripping teen and tween hormones
while parents fussed
about unpredictable electricity
park trees swayed
dropped dry needles
Juliet cried tears of joy
her chest showing through
her white blouse turned filmy
in a hurry to go home
cast off her vestal livery
dream in between dry sheets
of giving her virginity to someone
not bound to go and die a day later
