Brightest Star I See Tonight

Arcturus touches me
pinpricks of a blood orange juice
I walk naked in the night
serenaded by frogs
daring bats to tear
mosquitos from my hair

warmth of August
stars ripple with atmosphere
all those photons painting me
the perverts
desperate for a bit of skin

all those childless uncles
they watch and spin
making hot dinners no one wants
while our Sun makes Helium
Arcturus makes carbon
compressing a diamond
every partner has refused

hear me sing my million-year song
spinning in place
unable to glow
my feeble heat sucked away

there’s a pinch at my neck
I swat and create a blood splotch
a bit of my life wasted
those dreamless particles
bred in my glands and bones
touching my body
yet dying for sure

I think: it must be frightening
to feel the regard of the stars
and understand their attention
hear their songs on so many wavelengths
read back through their histories
collisions of youth
aborted planetary systems
betrayal of a binary twin
sucked back in and digested

I resolve to explode when I die
like old uncle Arcturus
leaving just my beard behind
expanding to spindrift
nesting material
for some unseen future generation
