Borrowed Dreams

Borrowed Dreams long poem

I lost my imagination in the modern customs of today
I went to sleep one evening, awoke to a place where I just can’t stay
Guile and avarice, greed, immorality and deceptive practice
Melted tight with corruption, self-indulgence a twisted-knotted lattice
Where there used to be bright colors, and smiles genuine with trust
Grey flashes and sharp teeth have replaced love with vile disgust
So few events in life bring forth humor, sadness bends a smile to frown
Boiling vats hold mixed emotions, sorrows deceive this hopeless clown
I am certain there must be something, which can spin my world around
Lift my chin up towards the heavens, plant my feet firmly on the ground
Give my time here genuine purpose, reasons beyond the earthly snares
Avoiding all those people who tender my regard with un-solemn glares
Then alas a golden moment such as in the twinkling of an eye
Dark clouds begin to lighten God’s face shows bright upon the sky
In my dreadful awkward self-pity I had forgotten my earthly test
Lord Jesus give me vision, honesty and strength, to act my best
As earth’s dynasties prepare to crumble and the fools partake of gold
Christians turn our gold leafed pages knowing our salvation can’t be sold
In the light of greatness showing to all the gift of love
I never had my own imagination, just borrowed dreams from God above

"Let every word tell; Make every word count!" Those words were spoken by Ed Fike, editor of editorial page of the San Diego union newspaper in 1981, when I took his night school journalism course at San Diego City College. Mr. Fike had a profound influence on the way I approach writing. I believe he had a profound influence on everyone he met. Anyway, I did not pursue a career in journalism, but instead became a tradesman, earning my living with my hands. Writing is my hobby and pastime.
