And I Am Barely There

And I Am Barely There short poem

Tell me about your pain, I said
Tell me about your worries, I said
I will hold your hands, I said
I will be your strength, I said

And he sobbed and he cried
And lamented all night long
He poured his heart out
And wept some more

Don’t grieve my love
Don’t worry, I said
All will be well
I am by your side

And he ceased to cry
His grief was no longer there
His furrowed brow cleared up
And a smile played on his lips

All night long I spoke
And he spoke some more
I listened and I comforted
And caressed and comforted more

The morning brought him light
His heart had lightened by then
He woke up fresh
Ready to take on yet another day

As he was setting out into the world
He looked deep into my eyes
And said
‘You are barely around for me these days!’
