A Few Steps Before The Storm

A Few Steps Before The Storm short poem

Bones of driftwood wind ornaments clatter
leak sand onto the porch, years removed from the sea

sky darkening since noon, wind coming in a variable rush
quelling the waves while gulls knife across the Sound

there’s a greening smell from the outer islands
tender blood squeezed free by the hand of low pressure

dog has been hiding inside the house pissing in a corner
it’s nothing that the thorough tide won’t replace with wrack

no boats now and no smoke to distract from piano key glint
old man Death tickling the lightning ivories a note at a time

boom on the lee shore, boom on this old instrument
folks on the radio expecting disaster for miles inland

the old causeway is not expected to last and I want to tear
down the lintel and break the windows of this shabby shack

my parents bought cheap before dad’s cancer and the affair
that drove my brothers and I into the hands of a sadist

unable to quench his hunger with the body of Christ
stepfather engraved his bellyache on our butts and thighs with a strap

I burned his old chair on the beach took a knife
to the old feather bed and would have dynamited the walls

but still I’m too scared to present more than a token of my rage
content to let the surge do the work I’ve always shirked

the dog comes to heel wide-eyed and shivering as chop builds
white fangs growing on the waves tearing up the shingle

go piss in the house one more time I tell the bitch but she’s done
I’m responsible for her and my memories that the storm won’t erase

Storm Of Doubts…

Storm Of Doubts... long poem

There’s a hurricane roaring outside and a storm brewing in my heart; so may emotions in so little time, first push you aside then call you mine. Doubts racing across my mind clouding my usual common sense. Give me time

The sun failed to divide the day into morning, noon, and night, Dressed in black and gray like a long spell of twilight, Stretched twenty four hours till dawn in an endless gloomy weeping, Under smoky skies soaked and dripped
