Unknown Depth

Unknown Depth long poem

Searing in sunlight and dense in humid breath
that uncomfortable nether-ground
we ancesterally dashed across
to escape the swift and sharp toothed
now is a show of umbrellas and baking skin

joy of wading into the delicious cool feeling
sand and weed caress your ankles
daring tease of waves buffeting your torso
dragging back against the shingle but rarely
is that force strong enough to haul you away

sometimes you go out – mostly upon the deep
yet sometimes within – you might test
your strength and will stroke by stroke
far away from swimming beaches and lifeguards
to float above crushing pressure and killing cold

we’re not made for this anymore, our little sparks
of heat atop the seeming endless undulation
those gravitational forces signalling
our residence on a tilted planet spinning
there is no mercy to be had just motion

our angular bodies struggle to move us
and our eyes though bred to make sense
of the submarine world are at odds with our brains
we’re betrayed by our ears and our tiny lungs
we find ourselves compressed and unable to speak

while below at so many levels incredible life riots
it coats and penetrates us the womb
we so long ago slipped free from
it’s unrecognizable as a place we once called home
a home for streamlined alien life

sometimes we imagine sharks and sometimes
whales boat large and barnacled
with brains of undiscovered complexity
that never have to squeeze through the barrier
of a tiny pelvis but slip into the sea

beauty of twilight and those ponderous
bodies built so much from the same salt environment
such a slight boundary between them
of course when they sing the noise resounds
like a spasm within their own being

it doesn’t matter what they say
deep diving titanic eating a kind of sophistication
unseen in almost any other creature
love of young and play and singing
what songs what words what depth

regular they dare the dry bright light
breaching because they have to
exchange air and risk exposure
to a hostile world where they once lived
which drove them back into the brine

perhaps they debate the dream of death
wondering what lies at great depth
a place where the dead breathe in water
where their past loves greet them
and every undulation sets of a ripple of song
