You Were Never There

You Were Never There elegy

You were never there…
Even when I knew my eyes
Could see you there before me
When I awoke for the first time
And I saw the world and all the moments left to come.
You were never there…
As the first single ray of light
Touched my palm
I only a saw the twisted hands of fate
That brought me here without you.
You were never there…
Even when my first words were thrown
Onto unforgiving ears
You were not there to listen
And take me in your arms
And tell me not to be afraid.
You were never there…
You never sung one lullaby to me
Or saw me cry
My first
And only tear.
You were never there…
As I took my first steps
The first times I ran
And jumped
And fell
You were never there to help me up.
You were never there…
You never saw me fall in love
And when I first was drunk as hell
I would have hated having you
By my side
You were never there…
The day I graduated first in class
All my friends were there for me
I looked around
High and low
But you were nowhere to be seen.
You were never there…
On the day I married
You were still missing from my life
I hated you for leaving me
But no longer was I alone.
You were never there…
The years we fought
The years my heart was torn in two
The years I lost
The years I found
The years that hardly made a sound.
You were never there…
And you’re still not here
All my world has died around me
But you were still the first
And still the one
Who hurt the most
You were never there…
Now I’m old
And frail and weak
I can barely feel the ground
That used to move
Beneath my feet
But you were never there…
You were here at home with me
You were always by my side because I never let you go
You died the day I met you
You gave your life for me
And for that I will love you now and for every moment left in time.
