Mother

Mother long poem

She is the one I could rely on
in times when things were scarce;
to always find a way to get by
when thing’s went from bad to worse.

She is a true matriarch;
the gel at the centre of all,
never too far away,
never more than a call.

She is the one who bore the pain
and held me close to keep me warm
through the cold and through the rain,
protecting me from harm.

She held on tight to my hand
through all the scary times;
my first days at school,
stood in terrified lines.

Then at the end of each day
when I’d really had enough,
she’d be stood at the door waiting,
a warm heart full of love.

And when illness struck me hard,
laid up and oh so low,
I had the comfort of knowing
she would never let me go.

Sacrificing her all
for her flesh and blood,
always standing second
to the common good.

On that dark lonely night
so many years ago
when deaths door stood ajar
silently beckoning me to go,

my overriding memory,
much more than my own fears,
was the heart wrenching sound
of her dreadful, terrified tears.

And yet she was always there,
To love me and to care.

All through our lives,
through thick and through thin,
through innocent laughter
and heart-breaking sin.

Through sunshine and showers,
through wind and through snow,
there is one thing for certain;
one thing we all know.

The rock of our lives
and forsaking all others,
she will always be there,
our sweet loving Mother.
