Am I Ready To Go

Am I Ready To Go prose poem

I see Him standing at the door, waiting
Can I cheat him once again?
Maybe confuse Him and He might just go away
He smiles knowingly
One day, someday, I will have to go
Maybe not today
But yes, definitely another day
That is where we all have to go
And yet we derive a thrill of having
Cheated Him once, twice and many more times
But He waits patiently
Like an indulgent mother
Watching her errant child
Knowingly indulging in our small game of hide and seek
And I too know that I cannot go on forever
Without taking that final gasp
And finally giving up myself up to Him
He will gently take me in His arms
And show me the Light
But why am I afraid to go with Him?
Maybe I am afraid of what He will show me
My Life that I lead on Earth
My life that had more if’s and but’s
Unanswered questions
And unexpressed emotions
My life that I thought was good
Because I didn’t take any risks or lose myself
I am afraid to look at my life that fled past me
Knowing that I could have lived, loved, laughed and been more me
And less of everyone else
I don’t fear death
I fear life now
A life of regret
A life of not being my true self
A life of living someone else’s dreams, hopes and aspirations.
A life that was not mine!
