Rural Encounter

Rural Encounter short poem

You get on those farmland roads and go
hammer down the essence of America
freaking out the visitors and immigrants
so much empty space
with roads sticking into it
like acupuncture on a cloud

that need for speed
thrilling the inner monkey
jealous of cheetahs
happy not to be a gazelle
it’s great in the daylight
so long as you don’t get hypnotized
white line fever
or the harvest-ready corn
whipping by

night it’s where the Milky Way appears
again the city dweller thinks
it’s a mistake
a wispy cloud
not wanting to confront that feeling
of cosmic tininess
get crushed by a billions stars
smashed by the journey
of all those impossible photons

watch the stars drink a beer
listen to the static and the radio
wonder which is more important
then creeping home
come upon a hitchhiker
long coat, cowboy boots
hair to his shoulders
doesn’t turn as your headlights
fix him in the diorama as out-of-place

it would be neighborly to pick him up
but he’s no neighbor you’ve ever seen

you paint for him many faces
in those ten seconds you register
his presence, slow the car
creep by confident
he is either Satan or your new best friend
