Into The Abyss

Into The Abyss short poem

Foal at the top of a rise
looks down on the city
comforted by the chaparral
like a blanket behind it
can’t help staring
at the glittering lights
racing to gather then
break apart
and scent the multipart
smoke of so many evils
thrills itself with the ruin
inherent in those
hoof-breaking arroyos
gray fields without fodder
watches until it can’t
still the quaking in its withers
then turns to go back
to the sanity of its own kind
