Sleepless

Woken up at two, by a pesky little dream,
I have been standing by the window,
Waiting for my sleep.
The neon lights burn ugly holes
In the black velvet of the night,
A thirsty lapwing flies around
Cursing aloud the heat.
A lone car zips along
trying to chase the dawn
Ghosts of dead dreams and
Ghouls of tomorrows unknown
Peep from under the bed
with their wicked grins.
I can see the night thinning off
Like an old woman’s hair
The day will soon be here
And my tryst with sleep over
But my faithless lover evades me
Though I keep pleading, refuses to return.
