Life As A Slave

Life As A Slave short poem

Slaves work hard in the cotton field
from morning to night deprived of yield.
They have to endure the heat from the sun.
Oh, when will their lives as slaves be done?

The slaves have little food to eat,
and not a bed where they can sleep.
Cooking, cleaning, it’s hard to do.
Their master doesn’t have a clue.

The deep depression of life in chains
weighs down on slaves like a hurricane.
If only slaves could just break free,
escape and live life happily.

But the slaves try to pass the time away
with the songs they sing at the end of the day.
They question why America’s people don’t see
that slaves in the South deserve to be free.

On December sixth of eighteen sixty five,
slavery was abolished; the slaves would survive!
The chains were broken; freedom has arrived.
President Lincoln had made America thrive.

Although slavery no longer exists,
black people still have chains on their wrists.
They are trapped in the horrors of inner city life,
where death is just the cut of a knife.
