Break

Break short poem

During the full charge of the afternoon
words or figures tumbling out of you
something the size and scent of work
remember that it is unimportant
vow to come to yourself
pull back from those artificial languages
feel your heart
navigate the river of your pulse
breathe the liquid air that gives you life
even as its corrosive kills you

the light will change quality
let sounds lose their meanings
and play the timpani of your ears
stroke the fine hairs of your forearm
like pleasing a pet
when all is work please yourself
find that itch at the base of your ribs
study the range of cartilage and bone
with your educated fingertips
and scratch until your eyes roll back

go back to work if you must
but kick your shoes off
grab a pencil with your toes and remember
the divine madness of your favorite relative
laughter from your heartspring
it seemed unstoppable because it was
laugh at least a single syllable
like you did when you were twelve
and laughing was the most amazing thing
you could think to do with your lips

Take a break, what does that really mean? Break an arm, a foot; break wind or a stick. Maybe, perhaps; but take a look a little deeper is the thought. Re-visit, revise; review, recharge. Take a head break, a spirit
