New Ground

New Ground short poem

Time is a fish bone in your throat
you think it’s clear until you swallow

your foot was coming along nicely
then you stepped wrong
not like when you were twenty
you’d ignore it and shake off the pain

time buys pain a home in your body
pays for your nerves to thicken up

all those excuses you used
to set up at home hungover
or just to seem somewhat tactful
about not seeing any people
they’re no longer excuses

your headache is like a fault
in a church’s big brass bell causing
the tolling of the hours to scream high

and so what, you think
doing up your buttons fingers gone stiff
foregoing fashion for clothes that
make you feel good taking longer
to get where you’re going and happy
to pay and to notice the first buds
hiding behind glossy green leaves

steering clear of the eddies of stupidity
you’ve gone through before
and can exhibit the Braille of scars

life would be easier
without the thorns
but you pierced yourself with them
hung all those talismans
purchased so dear

sleep now is like a lukewarm bath
a slippage more than an event

best not to think about those lips
you’ve been kissing
they may be dreams of youth
but they taste like dust

New Sod short poem

This day of sixty fruitful weeks shadow pristine relics of bundled keepsakes adorned in obsolete gazettes of passing snow storms, puppy training and next door’s junk mail. Transition logs re-call six states, five military orders, four duty stations, six rusted
