In The Moments Before The Shot

In The Moments Before The Shot short poem

Photo by 16 Miles of String

Silence.

Adrenaline pumping.
Blood waiting to flow.
The back of my head is cold.
I can’t move an inch.
I can’t even speak.

Cold sweat
Running down my face.
Breath, rhythmic and stuttering.
Everything flashes past my eyes
In a single, painful instant.

What would my family do
If they could see me now?
Would they shout and scream?
Call the police?
Would they just watch in horror?

Now I’ll never know.
All I can do is wait
Until the shot comes
To take me away.

Poet’s Note –
This poem isn’t inspired by any real event – I just tried to put myself in the situation of being held hostage with a gun to my head and wrote a poem about it.

My muse is like an excitable dog. It catches sight of totally random things and starts yapping and running around and wagging its tail and WILL NOT STOP until I write a poem about it.My poetry is sometimes based on personal experience and sometimes on other things. Aside from that, I enjoy video games (My favourite game series is Mass Effect) and the popular television show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
