Back in Tōhoku

Back in Tōhoku sonnet poems

The BBC Philharmonic played Nimrod,
Enigma Variations, and explained
this is for your loved ones, we remember:
and the music was like a great, great wave.

A musician said – looking on their faces,
it was important to keep yourself in check,
to hold back the tears and – she added –
this was not the music of destruction

but continued life; the audience needed
hope and understanding in the beauty
and the power of the world – and it seemed
very like that as she spoke and Nimrod

rode up on that ravaged shore of old Japan
and carried the audience clean of pain.

Having moved along from prose I have been writing poems for a few years now, trying different forms - gaining and failing (see Sonnets) - trying to match mind and soul on the page: it was never going to be easy. The best writing is generally poetry, the worst too. So, we work on it.
