When We Meet

When We Meet ode

When we meet, you’ll catch me up on all your birthdays
that I missed.

The time you lost your keys to the car when you went for a hike
and found them in your backpack, but in a different pocket when
you went looking for your wallet.

You will tell me how you first when skiing, sky diving and snorkelling
all with a cast on.

When we meet you’ll tell me how you thought Oysters were disgusting
but finally tried them
and now you’re hooked

You will tell me how you cried all night when your dog died in your arms
and how another dog came to your door the next day

You will tell me that your favorite junk food is potato chips
and that you’ve never eaten at McDonalds, Jack In The Box or any other fast food

When we meet you will tell me how much you love to sit in the car and listen to the rain
while the water runs down the windows.

You will tell me how much you love going to the beach but hate
the crunching of sand in your teeth.

You will tell me how you like to lie around on Sunday mornings
reading the sunday comics, the want ads, then tell me you’re not religious
but love talking about spirituality.

When we meet
you’ll tell me how much you looked for me
cried because you couldn’t find me

You’ll tell me I missed our anniversary
But I can make it up to you by taking you to a cottage on the beach because
sand gets in everything.

You’ll tell me how much you’ve loved me
even before you ever met me.

When we meet
I will tell you I’m sorry that I’m late
and you’ll reply “don’t let it happen again.”

I'm a bassist and composer for close to 40 years. I began writing poetry about as long as I've been playing Bass. Most of my writing up to the last 10 years was schlock. I think I've managed to cull the vapid, and perhaps nurture something more mature in my writing. Sometimes my poems are love driven, other times they're just thoughts spurred on by the moment. Whatever the case, I hope that what I conjure up is emotive, provocative and at best entertaining.
