Looking Up

Looking Up short poem

I am no better then anyone else,
but I do know I love myself,
but I did not always love me,
I had to remove some things for me to see,
I grew up in the slums of south Philly,
where people are looking to escape their own misery,
single parents raising their kids,
because daddy is dead or doing a bid,
fortunately my parents stayed together,
I mean toughed out on all sorts of weather,
I remember there was hardly no food and the house was cold,
it got so bad my father’s blood was sold,
adults had to escort us to school because of racial tension,
there were black and white fights and under ground lynching,
I witnessed poverty at its core, residents searching for more,
I remember my mom’s praying and crying, knees on the floor,
no sunny days only bummy days,
our only smile was when our parents got paid,
it was a day we would eat and not get beat,
ignoring the pain that’s coming next week,
yet them past nightmares taught me to respect my fears,
respect my peers, and appreciate the living that’s here,
rich or broke, I am a star no matter what,
for a long time I have been looking down, it’s time to look up……

Though I clearly see Paralleling traits, Corresponding facets Astonishingly quaint This complex, albeit moving, Prominent connection Holds a minute blemish Worthy of reflection. Contrast, yes there’s one, A distinction can be drawn, For you’re rarely right, While I’m never wrong!
