She Who Never Lived

She Who Never Lived short poem

“Her eyes, they said, sparkled like the stars,
Her merry laughter, they said, could be heard from afar.
Her hair, they said, fell in dark brown curls,
She was the prettiest amongst even the prettiest of girls.
Her smile, they said, was truly divine,
It would send jolts up and down your spine.
She was fun, they said, fun to be around,
Her mischievous nature would leave you spellbound.
She excelled, they said, in all the arts,
One look from her could melt even the coldest of hearts.
When she was angry, they said, she would sulk and pout,
But otherwise, she would talk day in and day out.
I have to wonder though – does she even exist? I have my doubts.
For a girl is never welcomed with arms open wide.
She is never talked about with pride.
They ask God why He did this to them,
A girl is born to a family then
For they get a useless girl instead of a blessed boy,
And hence their lives are drained of all joy.
Sometimes she is killed, before even opening her eyes,
Whilst on her killers’ cheek, there is not a single tear to dry.
A girl is as good as a male, even better maybe,
Yet inequality envelopes her, even as a baby.
A solution to this injustice is yet to be found,
But we refuse to step down,
Until we hear this all around –
“A girl was born? You must be proud!”
